สำหรับโชเพนฮาวร์แล้ว เรามีหนทางที่จะหลุดออกจากการครอบงำของเจตจำนงได้ ด้วยการปฏิเสธเจตจำนงนั้นเอง เรื่องนี้ค่อนข้างแปลก เพราะโชเพนฮาวร์ได้แสดงไว้ก่อนแล้วว่า ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างได้แก่เจตจำนง ดังนั้นการปฏิเสธเจตจำนง จึงน่าจะเท่ากับการปฏิเสธทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างไปด้วย นั่นคือปฏิเสธทั้งสิ่งที่มีอยู่ภายนอก (ภววิสัย) และภายใน (อัตวิสัย) ทั้งคู่ เพื่อให้เข้าใจเรื่องนี้ละเอียดขึ้น คงต้องยกข้อเขียนของโชเพนฮาวร์มาพิจารณา:
